disappear, the twilight (al-shafaq) disappears." It was narrated by Muslim. In the hadith of Abū Hurayrah, the Prophet, peace and blessings of God be upon him, said: "Prayer has a beginning and an end. The beginning of the time for the Maghrib prayer is when the sun sets, and the end of its time is when the horizon disappears." It was narrated by al-Tirmidhī. These are authentic (sahih) texts, and it is not permissible to oppose them with something speculative. Furthermore, because it is one of the prayers, it has an extended time like the rest of the prayers. Also, because it is one of the two prayers that are combined, its time is connected to the time of the prayer with which it is combined, like the Zuhr and the ʿAṣr. Furthermore, what is before the disappearance of the twilight is a time for its continuity, so it is a time for its commencement, just as it is for its beginning. Their hadiths are interpreted as referring to what is recommended (istihbāb) and preferred, and the dislike of delaying it; this is why al-Khiraqī said: "It is not recommended to delay it." For the hadiths regarding it emphasize performing it at the beginning of its time, and the least of its states is the emphasis of recommendation. If it were assumed that the hadiths are contradictory, it would be necessary to interpret their hadiths as being abrogated, because they were at the beginning of the obligation of prayer in Mecca, while our hadiths are from Medina and are later, so they would be abrogating what preceded them of that which contradicts them. And God knows best. 115 - Issue; He said: (And when the twilight disappears, which is the redness in travel, and in the city the whiteness; because in the city the redness may descend and the walls conceal it, so it is thought that it has disappeared, but when the whiteness disappears, it is certain, and the ʿIshāʾ prayer becomes obligatory until one-third of the night.) There is no disagreement regarding the entry of the time for the ʿIshāʾ prayer upon the disappearance of the twilight, but they differed as to what the twilight is. The madhhab of our Imām, may Allah have mercy on him, is that the twilight by which the time for the Maghrib prayer exits and the time for the ʿIshāʾ prayer enters is the redness. This is the view of Ibn ʿUmar, Ibn ʿAbbās, ʿAṭāʾ, Mujāhid, Saʿīd ibn Jubayr, al-Zuhrī, Mālik, al-Thawrī, Ibn Abī Laylā, al-Shāfiʿī, Isḥāq, and the two companions of Abū Ḥanīfah.
