Samurah, that the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) used to recite in the dawn prayer {Qaf} [Qaf 50] and {The Glorious Quran} [Qaf 50:1], and suchlike, and his prayer thereafter tended toward brevity. Qutbah ibn Malik said: I heard the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) reciting in the dawn prayer {And the tall palm trees} [Qaf 50:10]. Both of them were narrated by Muslim. Al-Nasa'i narrated that he recited {The Romans} [Al-Rum 30] in it. Ibn Majah narrated from Abdullah ibn al-Sa'ib, who said: The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) recited {The Believers} [Al-Mu'minun 23] in the dawn prayer, and when he reached the mention of Jesus, he was overcome by a choking cough and bowed. Abu Dawud and Ibn Majah narrated from Amr ibn Hurayth who said: It is as if I hear the voice of the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) reciting in the morning prayer {So I swear by the retreating stars, those that run and hide} [Al-Takwir 81:15-16].
As for the Zhuhr and Asr prayers, Muslim, Abu Dawud, and Ibn Majah narrated from Abu Sa'id (meaning al-Khudri, may Allah be pleased with him), who said: Thirty of the Companions of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) gathered and said: Come, let us estimate the recitation of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) in the prayers where he did not recite aloud, and no two of them disagreed; so they estimated his recitation in the first rak'ah of the Zhuhr prayer as equivalent to thirty verses, and in the second rak'ah as half of that, and they estimated that in the Asr prayer to be half of the two other rak'ahs of the Zhuhr prayer.
