And because it is not an exit for bodily discharge, it is not an 'awrah, just like the leg. The rationale for the first report is what was narrated [by al-Khallal with his chain of transmission, and Imam Ahmad in his "Musnad", from] (14) Jarhad, that the Messenger of Allah (may Allah bless him and grant him peace) saw him exposing his thigh, so he said: "Cover your thigh, for the thigh is part of the 'awrah" (15). [Al-Bukhari said (16): The hadith of Anas is more supported by chains, and the hadith of Jarhad is more precautionary] (17). Al-Daraqutni (18) narrated that the Messenger of Allah (may Allah bless him and grant him peace) said to Ali, may Allah be pleased with him: "Do not expose your thigh, and do not look at the thigh of the living or the dead." [This is explicit in its indication, and thus it is more appropriate] (19). Abu Bakr narrated with his chain of transmission from Abu Ayyub al-Ansari, who said: The Messenger of Allah (may Allah bless him and grant him peace) said: "Below the navel and above the two knees (20) are part of the 'awrah (21)."
