as well as something similar. The manifest meaning of Al-Khiraqi’s speech is that it does not suffice; because of his statement: "something of clothing," and this is not called clothing. This is the position of the Qadi. Some of our companions said: It suffices, because this is a "thing," [so the hadith would encompass it] (13). It has been narrated from Jabir that he prayed in a single garment, wrapping himself in it, and it is as if I am looking at him, as if there were a mouse’s tail on his shoulder (14). [And from Ibrahim] (15) who said: The companions of the Messenger of Allah (may Allah bless him and grant him peace), if one of them did not find a garment, he would cast a rope (iqal) upon his shoulder and pray. The correct view is that it does not suffice, because the Prophet (may Allah bless him and grant him peace) said: "If one of you prays in a single garment, let him cross its two ends over his shoulders (16)." It is among the authentic (sahih) narrations, and Abu Dawud narrated it (17). Furthermore, the command to place it on the shoulders is for the purpose of covering, and this is not achieved by placing a thread [or a rope] (18), and it is not called a covering [or clothing] (18). What was narrated from Jabir is not authentic, and what was narrated from the Companions, if it is authentic from them (19), it is because they lacked anything else; [due to his statement: "If he does not find a garment." In this is evidence that it does not suffice when a garment is found] (20).
Section: Al-Khiraqi did not distinguish between the obligatory (fard) and the voluntary (nafl) [prayers; because the report is general regarding both of them] (21), and because what
