from Abu Hurayrah and Abu Sa'id, from the Prophet (may Allah bless him and grant him peace), that he forbade two styles of dress: 'ishtimal al-samma'' (the wrapping of the Samma') and that a man should sit with his knees drawn up to his chest (ihtiba') while in a garment such that there is nothing between his private parts and the sky. There is disagreement regarding the interpretation of 'ishtimal al-samma''. Some of our companions said: It is for a man to drape a garment over himself (idtiba') while wearing nothing else. The meaning of idtiba' is to place the middle of the rida' (cloak) under his right armpit and place (30) its two ends over his left shoulder, leaving his right shoulder exposed, [and it was disliked for that reason. The interpretation of 'ishtimal al-samma' has come in the hadith of Abu Sa'id as such, from the narration of Ishaq, from 'Abd al-Razzaq, from Ma'mar, from al-Zuhri, from - I believe - (31) 'Ata' ibn Yazid, from Abu Sa'id, that the Prophet (may Allah bless him and grant him peace) forbade two styles of dress: 'ishtimal al-samma', which is to place the middle of the rida' under his right armpit and to cast its end over his left shoulder] (32). Hanbal narrated from Ahmad [regarding 'ishtimal al-samma'] (33): It is for a man to drape the garment (idtiba') (34) while he has no izar (waist wrapper) on. [Thus his side and his 'awrah appear] (35). However, if he has an izar on, then that is the dress of the muhrim (one in ihram); if it were not sufficient, the Prophet (may Allah bless him and grant him peace) would not have done it (36). Abu Bakr narrated, with his chain of narration from Ibn Mas'ud, who said: The Messenger of Allah (may Allah bless him and grant him peace) forbade a man to wear a single garment, taking hold of its sides from his shoulder; that is called the Samma'. Some of the companions of al-Shafi'i said:
