It is to wrap oneself in a garment, then take one's hands out from the front of one's chest, [so that one's 'awrah (private parts) appears] (37). Abu 'Ubayd said: (38) 'Ishtimal al-samma' among the Arabs is for a man to wrap himself in his garment (39), covering his entire body with it, without lifting a side of it to take (40) his hand out from it. It is as if (41) he intends by that to protect himself against something he fears might affect him, so he is unable to do so. The interpretation of the jurists (42) is to wrap oneself in a single garment with nothing else on, then lift it from one of its sides and place it over his shoulders, so that his private parts appear from it, and the jurists are more knowledgeable regarding the interpretation. [According to this interpretation, the prohibition is for the sake of prohibition (tahrim), and the prayer is invalidated by it] (43).
And it is disliked (makruh) to perform sadl, which is to let the ends of the rida' (cloak) fall from both sides without returning one of its two ends over the other shoulder and without holding the two ends together with one's hands. [Sadl was disliked by] (44) Ibn Mas'ud, al-Nakha'i, al-Thawri, al-Shafi'i, Mujahid, and 'Ata'. It was narrated (45) from Jabir and Ibn 'Umar that there is an allowance (rukhsah) regarding it (46), and it was narrated from Makhul, al-Zuhri, and 'Ubayd Allah ibn al-Hasan [ibn al-Husayn] (47) that they performed it, and from al-Hasan and Ibn Sirin [that they used to perform sadl over their shirts] (48). Ibn al-Mundhir said: I do not know of any established hadith regarding it. It has been narrated from Abu
