with a hobble-rope (iqal), and it was reported similarly from Yazid ibn al-Asamm (70).

As for praying in a red garment, our companions said: It is disliked for men to wear it or to pray in it. 'Umar purchased a garment and saw a red thread in it, so he returned it. However, Abu Juhayfah narrated: The Prophet (peace be upon him) came out in a red hullah (set of garments), then a short spear ('anazah) (71) was planted for him, and he stepped forward and prayed the Dhuhr prayer. Al-Bara' said: I have never seen anyone with a shock of hair (limmah) in a red hullah more handsome than the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him). Both [Bukhari and Muslim] agreed upon these two [reports] (72). Abu Dawud (73) narrated from Hilal ibn 'Amir, who said: I saw the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) delivering a sermon while riding a mule, wearing a red burd (striped garment), with 'Ali in front of him relaying his words (74). The justification for the dislike of this is what Abu Dawud (75) narrated with his chain of narration from 'Abdullah ibn 'Amr, who said: A man wearing two red burdahs entered upon the Prophet (peace be upon him) and greeted him, but the Prophet (peace be upon him) did not return his greeting. Also with his chain [of narration] (76) from Rafi' ibn Khadij, who said: We went out with the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) on a journey, and the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) saw upon our pack animals coverings containing threads of red wool ('ihn) (77)
