need for it, then there are two viewpoints: one of them is that it is permitted because the prohibition of wearing it is for the sake of arrogance (al-khuyala') and breaking the hearts of the poor, and arrogance during the time of war is not blameworthy. [The Prophet (peace be upon him) said when he saw one of his companions walking between the two ranks, acting haughty in his gait: "Indeed, it is a gait that Allah hates, except in this situation"] (113). The second [view] is that it is prohibited due to the generality of the report. [The apparent meaning of Ahmad's words (may Allah have mercy on him) is its permissibility absolutely, which is the opinion of 'Ata'] (114). al-Athram said: I heard Abu Abd Allah being asked about wearing silk in war, and he said: I hope there is no harm in it. al-Athram also narrated with his chain of authority from 'Urwah [and 'Ata that 'Urwah had] (115) a yalmaq (116) (outer garment) made of silk brocade, the lining of which was silk, stuffed with raw silk, and he used to wear it in war. As for that which is woven from silk and other materials, such as a garment woven from cotton and silk, or cotton and linen, the ruling depends on which of the two is predominant. The small amount (117) is considered consumed within it; it is like the ferrule (118) of silver or the embroidery (alam) made of silk. It has been narrated from Ibn Abbas that he said: The Prophet (peace be upon him) only forbade a garment made entirely of pure silk, but as for the embroidery and the warp of the garment, there is no harm in it. Recorded by al-Athram with his chain of authority, as well as Abu Dawud (119). Ibn Abd al-Barr said: The school of thought of Ibn Abbas and a group of scholars is that what is forbidden is pure silk which is not mixed with anything else. If the silk is the lesser amount, it is permitted, and if the cotton is the lesser amount, it is forbidden. If they are equal, there are two viewpoints regarding its prohibition and permissibility.
