a menstruating woman except with a head covering" (12). Narrated by al-Tirmidhi, who said: A hasan hadith. In this, there is an indication of the obligation to cover the stomach and other parts of the rest of the body.
Section: It is recommended that a woman prays in a dir' (chemise), which is (13) a shirt, [but it must be long enough to cover her feet] (14), a khimar, [which is the head covering] (15), and a jilbab [which is the outer wrap] (16), which she wraps around herself over the chemise. Something similar (17) to that has been narrated from Umar, his son, Aisha, Ubaydah al-Salmani, and Ata', [and it is the view of al-Shafi'i. Ahmad said (19): The generality of them have agreed upon the chemise and the head covering, and whatever is added to that is better and more covering, and because] (18) when she has a jilbab on, she keeps it away from her body while bowing and prostrating so that it does not outline her shape, revealing her buttocks and the places of her major 'awrah (intimate parts) (19).
Section (20): It is sufficient for her from clothing the mandatory covering [according to what we have explained by the hadith of Umm Salamah, that she asked the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him)] (20): "May a woman pray in a chemise and a head covering, without a lower garment?" He said: "Yes (21), if the chemise is long enough to cover the tops of her feet" (21). It has been narrated from Maymunah and Umm Salamah that they used to pray in a chemise and a head covering, without having a lower garment on them. Narrated by Malik, in al-Muwatta' (22).
