until he does not doubt that he has performed what (48) he wasted. (49) He should limit himself to performing the obligatory prayers and not perform supererogatory prayers or their Sunan between them; because the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) missed four prayers on the day of the Trench, so he commanded Bilal, who gave the Iqama, and he performed the Dhuhr. Then he commanded him, and he gave the Iqama, and he performed the Asr. Then he commanded him, and he gave the Iqama, and he performed the Maghrib. Then he commanded him, and he gave the Iqama, and he performed the Isha (50). It was not mentioned that he performed any Sunnah between them. Furthermore, the obligatory is more important, so occupying oneself with it is more deserving, unless the prayers are few, in which case there is no harm in performing their regular Sunan, because the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) missed the Fajr prayer and performed its Sunnah before it (51).
Chapter (52): If he forgot a prayer from a day and does not know its specific identity, he repeats the prayer of [the entire day] (53). Ahmad explicitly stated this (54). This is the opinion of the majority of scholars, and that is because specifying [which prayer is being performed] is a condition for the validity of the written prayer, and it cannot be achieved (55) except by repeating all the prayers (56).
Chapter: When he sleeps in a place while traveling and wakes up after the time for prayer has passed, it is recommended (57) for him to move from that place and pray elsewhere. Ahmad explicitly stated this because of what Abu Hurayrah narrated, saying: We camped with the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him), and we did not wake up until the sun had risen.
