the prayer, because al-Mundhir narrated from Ibn Mas'ud who said: "It is an act of rudeness for a man to frequently wipe his forehead before finishing the prayer." [It was also narrated as a marfu' (elevated) hadith] (80). Al-Awza'i considered it disliked. Sa'id ibn Jubayr said: "It is from rudeness." [Al-Athram narrated] (80) from Ibn Abbas who said: "Do not wipe your forehead, do not blow, and do not move pebbles." Malik and the People of Reason (Ahl al-Ra'y) permitted it. Ahmad disliked fanning oneself [in prayer], except due to severe distress. Ishaq held this view as well. 'Ata', Abu 'Abd al-Rahman, Muslim ibn Yasar, and Malik also considered it disliked. Ibn Sirin, Mujahid, al-Hasan, and [Anbasa ibn Sa'id] (81) permitted it. [Leaning or swaying in prayer was also considered disliked, because] (82) al-Najjar narrated with his isnad from the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) who said: "When one of you stands in his prayer, let him keep his limbs still and not sway like the Jews." The prayer is not invalidated [by all of this, except for what constitutes an action, such as idle play or cracking one's knuckles, if it is done frequently in succession, for that invalidates the prayer] (83).
Section: There is no harm in counting [the recitation of] verses in prayer. Ahmad refrained from a definitive stance on counting [the repetition of] tasbih. Abu Bakr said: There is no harm in it because it is in the same meaning as counting verses. This is the opinion of Ibn Abi Mulayka (84), Tawus, [Yahya ibn Waththab, al-Hasan, al-Nakha'i, Sa'id ibn Jubayr,] (85) and Ibn Sirin,
