before the setting of the sun. Agreed upon. And from Abū Umāmah ibn Sahl, who said: We prayed the Zhuhr with ʿUmar ibn ʿAbd al-ʿAzīz, then we went out until we entered upon Anas ibn Mālik, and we found him praying the ʿAṣr. We said: O Abū Ḥamzah, what is this prayer that you have prayed? He said: The ʿAṣr, and this is the prayer of the Messenger of God, peace and blessings of God be upon him, which we used to pray with him. Agreed upon. And from Abū al-Malīḥ, who said: We were with Buraydah on an expedition on a cloudy day, and he said: Hasten the ʿAṣr prayer, for the Prophet, peace and blessings of God be upon him, said: 'Whoever misses the ʿAṣr prayer, his deeds are rendered void.' Reported by al-Bukhārī. It is narrated from the Prophet, peace and blessings of God be upon him, that he said: 'The first time of the prayer is the pleasure of God, and the last time is the pardon of God.' It is narrated by ʿAbd Allāh ibn ʿUmar al-ʿUmarī. Abū ʿĪsā said: This is a gharīb (strange) hadith. As for the hadith of Rāfiʿ which they used as evidence, it is not authentic. Al-Tirmidhī said this. Al-Dāraquṭnī said: ʿAbd al-Wāḥid ibn Nāfiʿ narrates it, and he is not strong, and it is not authentic from Rāfiʿ nor from any other of the Companions. The authentic position from them is the hastening of the ʿAṣr prayer and performing it early.
