Ibn Abbas: "That which you consider excessive in your heart." Al-Khallal said: The position upon which he settled (10) regarding what is considered 'excessive' is that it is according to the measure which every person deems excessive within himself. Ibn Aqil said: Only what is considered excessive to the average person is to be taken into account. Qatadah said, regarding the size of a dirham: It is excessive. A similar view is held by al-Nakha'i, Sa'id ibn Jubayr, Hammad ibn Abi Sulayman, al-Awza'i, and the Ashab al-Ra'y (proponents of analytical reasoning), because it is narrated from the Prophet (may Allah bless him and grant him peace) that he said: "Prayer is to be repeated due to [the presence of] blood the size of a dirham" (11). Our position is that there is no limit for this in the Sharia, so it is referred back to custom, just like separation and protection [of property]. What they narrated is not authentic; for the Hafiz Abu al-Fadl al-Maqdisi (12) said: It is fabricated (13). Moreover, it only points to the site of the dispute by the implication of its wording, and the Ashab al-Ra'y do not consider it a valid proof.
Section: Pus, sanies (serous discharge), and that which is generated from blood are in the same category, except that Ahmad said: It is lighter than blood. It is narrated from Ibn Umar and al-Hasan that they did not consider it like blood. Abu Mijlaz said, regarding sanies: Allah only mentioned 'flowing blood'. Ummay ibn Rabi'ah (14) said: I saw Tawus, and it was as if his lower garment was a leather mat (15) [stiffened] from sores that were on his legs. Ismail al-Sarraj said: I saw the hem of the lower garment of Mujahid had dried (16) from sanies and blood due to sores that were on his calves. And he said
