He said: The Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, said: "If the edge of the sun begins to appear, delay prayer until it fully emerges, and if the edge of the sun begins to set, delay prayer until it has set." Both are reported by Muslim (40). From Uqbah ibn Amir, who said: "There are three times at which the Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, forbade us from praying or burying our dead: when the sun rises clearly until it ascends, when the sun is at its zenith until it moves westward, and when the sun leans towards setting until it has set." From Amr ibn Abasah, who said: I said, "O Messenger of Allah, tell me about prayer." He said: "Perform the Subh prayer, then refrain from prayer until the sun rises and ascends; for it rises between the two horns of a devil, and at that time the disbelievers prostrate to it. Then pray, for the prayer is attended and witnessed, until the shadow of a lance stands still. Then refrain from prayer, for at that time Hell is stoked. Then, when the shade returns, pray, for the prayer is witnessed and attended until you perform the Asr prayer. Then refrain from prayer until the sun sets; for it sets between the two horns of a devil, and at that time the disbelievers prostrate to it." These were reported by [Muslim] (44).
