Section: One should recite in the two rak'ahs after Maghrib, {Say, 'O disbelievers'} [Al-Kafirun] and {Say, 'He is Allah, [who is] One'} [Al-Ikhlas], based on what Ibn Mas'ud narrated, saying: I cannot count how many times I heard the Messenger of Allah (may Allah bless him and grant him peace) reciting in the two rak'ahs after Maghrib and in the two rak'ahs before Fajr {Say, 'O disbelievers'} and {Say, 'He is Allah, [who is] One'}. Recorded by al-Tirmidhi and Ibn Majah (25).
It is recommended to perform the Sunnah prayers at home, based on what we have mentioned from the hadith of Ibn 'Umar: that the Messenger of Allah (may Allah bless him and grant him peace) used to pray the two rak'ahs of Fajr, Maghrib, and 'Isha' in his house (26). Abu Dawud said: I never saw Ahmad perform them—meaning the two rak'ahs of Fajr (27)—in the mosque at all; he would simply go out and sit in the mosque until the prayer was established. Al-Athram said: I heard Abu 'Abd Allah being asked about the two rak'ahs after Dhuhr: where should they be prayed? He said: "In the mosque." Then he said: "As for the two rak'ahs before Fajr, they are in his house, and after Maghrib, they are in his house." Then he said: "There is nothing here more emphasized than the two rak'ahs after Maghrib." He mentioned the hadith of Ibn Ishaq: "Pray these two rak'ahs in your houses" (28). It was said to Ahmad: "What if a man's home is far?" He said: "I do not know." This is because of what Sa'd ibn Ishaq narrated from his father, from his grandfather, that the Prophet (may Allah bless him and grant him peace) came to them in the mosque of Banu 'Abd al-Ashhal, prayed Maghrib, and saw them performing voluntary prayers after it.
