Section: It is recommended to perform voluntary prayer (nafl) between Maghrib and Isha, because of what is narrated from Anas bin Malik regarding this verse: "Their sides forsake their beds" (111), the verse. He said: They used to perform voluntary prayers between Maghrib and Isha. Narrated by Abu Dawood (113). And from 'Aishah (may Allah be pleased with her), from the Messenger of Allah (may Allah bless him and grant him peace), who said: "Whoever prays twenty rak'ahs after Maghrib, Allah will build for him a house in Paradise" (114). Abu 'Isa said: This is a ghareeb (singular) hadith.
Section: As for what has been narrated from the Prophet (may Allah bless him and grant him peace) regarding shortening or lengthening it, it is best to follow his practice in that, for he, peace be upon him, would not do anything but that which is best. We have already mentioned some of what the Prophet (may Allah bless him and grant him peace) used to shorten and lengthen. Regarding what is beyond that, the narration differs. It is narrated that the best [practice] is to increase the frequency of bowing (ruku') and prostration (sujud), due to the saying of Ibn Mas'ud: I know the pairs that the Messenger of Allah (may Allah bless him and grant him peace) used to combine as two surahs in every rak'ah, twenty surahs from the Mufassal. Narrated by Muslim (115). The Prophet (may Allah bless him and grant him peace) said: "There is no servant who prostrates (116) a prostration but that Allah writes for him a good deed for it, erases a bad deed from him for it, and raises him a degree for it" (117). فصل: ويُسْتَحَبُّ التَّنَفُّلُ بين المَغْرِبِ والعِشَاءِ؛ لما رُوِىَ عن أنَسِ بن مَالِكٍ في هذه الآية: {تَتَجَافَى جُنُوبُهُمْ عَنِ الْمَضَاجِعِ} (١١١) الآية، قال: كانوا يَتَنَفَّلُونَ (١١٢) ما بين المَغْرِبِ والعِشَاءِ، يُصَلُّونَ. رَوَاه أبو دَاوُدَ (١١٣). وعن عائشةَ رَضِى اللهُ عنها، عن رسولِ اللهِ -صلى اللَّه عليه وسلم-، قال: "مَنْ صَلَّى بَعْدَ المَغْرِبِ عِشْرِينَ رَكْعَة بَنَى اللهُ لَهُ بَيْتًا فِى الجَنَّةِ" (١١٤). قال أبو عيسى: هذا حَدِيثٌ غَرِيبٌ.
فصل: وما وَرَدَ عن النَّبِيِّ -صلى اللَّه عليه وسلم- تَخْفِيفُه أو تَطْوِيلُه، فالأفْضَلُ اتبَاعُه فيه، فإنَّه عليه السَّلَامُ لا يَفْعَلُ إلَّا الأفْضَلَ، وقد ذَكَرْنا بعضَ ما كان النَّبِيُّ -صلى اللَّه عليه وسلم- يُخَفِّفُهُ ويُطَوِّلُهُ، وما عَدَا ذلك فاخْتَلَفَتِ الرِّوَايَةُ فيه؛ فَرُوِىَ أنَّ الأفْضَلَ كَثْرَةُ الرُّكُوعِ والسُّجُودِ، لقولِ ابْنِ مسعودٍ: إنّي لأعْلَمُ النَّظَائِرَ التي كان رَسُولُ اللهِ -صلى اللَّه عليه وسلم- يَقْرِنُ بَيْنَهُنَّ سُورَتَيْنِ في كلّ رَكْعَةٍ، عِشْرُونَ سُورَةً من المُفَصَّلِ. رَوَاهُ مُسْلمٌ (١١٥). وقال النبيُّ -صلى اللَّه عليه وسلم-: "مَا مِنْ عَبْدٍ يَسْجُدُ (١١٦) سَجْدَةً إلَّا كَتَبَ اللهُ لَهُ بِهَا حَسَنَةً، ومَحَا عَنْهُ بِهَا سَيِّئَةً، ورَفَعَ لَهُ بِهَا دَرَجَةً" (١١٧). والثانية، التَّطْوِيلُ أفْضَلُ؛ لقَوْلِ
