of the Companions. And when he finishes the Qunut, should he wipe his face with his hands (31)? There are two reports regarding this. One of them is that he should not do so, because it was narrated from Ahmad that he said: I have not heard anything regarding this. And because it is a supplication in the prayer, so wiping the face in it is not recommended, like all other supplications in it. The second is that it is recommended, due to the report that we narrated. The Sa'ib ibn Yazid narrated that the Messenger of God (peace and blessings of God be upon him) used to raise his hands when he supplicated, and he would wipe his face with his hands (32). And because it is a supplication in which he raises his hands, so he wipes his face with them, just as if he were outside (33) of the prayer, and it differs from other supplications, for one does not raise his hands in those.
Section: Qunut is not a Sunnah in the Morning prayer, nor in any other prayers, except for the Witr. This is the opinion of al-Thawri and Abu Hanifah. It was narrated from Ibn Abbas, Ibn Umar, Ibn Mas'ud, and Abu al-Darda. Malik, Ibn Abi Layla, al-Hasan ibn Salih, and al-Shafi'i said: It is a Sunnah to perform Qunut in the Morning prayer at all times; because Anas said: The Messenger of God (peace and blessings of God be upon him) did not cease to perform Qunut in the Fajr prayer until he departed from this world. Recorded by Imam Ahmad in "al-Musnad" (34), and Umar used to perform Qunut in the Morning prayer in the presence of the Companions and others. Our evidence is what was narrated, that the Prophet (peace and blessings of God be upon him) performed Qunut for a month, supplicating against a tribe from the tribes of the Arabs, then he left it. Recorded by Muslim (35). And Abu narrated...
