thereby with five [rak'ahs], not sitting in any of them except at the end of them. Agreed upon (10). From Ibn Abbas, from the Prophet (peace and blessings of God be upon him), who said: "Then he performed Witr with five, not sitting between them." In one wording: "He performed ablution, then prayed seven, or five, performing Witr with them, and did not perform the taslim except at the end of them." Recorded by Abu Dawud (11). Salih Mawla al-Taw'ama (12) said: "I witnessed the people before the Harrah performing forty-one rak'ahs, performing Witr with five, performing the taslim between every two, performing Witr with one, and praying the five all together." Recorded by al-Athram. As for the nine and seven, Zurara ibn Awfa narrated from Sa'id ibn Hisham, who said: I said—meaning to Aishah—"O Mother of the Believers, inform me about the Witr of the Messenger of God (peace and blessings of God be upon him)?" She said: "We used to prepare his siwak and his water for ablution, then God would awaken him whenever He willed to awaken him, so he would use the siwak, perform ablution, and pray nine (13) rak'ahs, not sitting in them except in the eighth. He would remember God, praise Him, and call upon Him, then he would rise without performing the taslim. Then he would stand and pray the ninth, then sit and remember God, praise Him (14), and call upon Him, then perform the taslim in such a way that he would make us hear it. When the Messenger of God (peace and blessings of God be upon him) grew old and gained weight, he performed Witr with seven, and did the same in the two [rak'ahs] as he did in the first [instance] (15)." He said: "So I went to Ibn Abbas and told him

(10) Al-Bukhari did not record it; he only recorded the beginning of it from Aishah in: "Chapter: How was the prayer of the Prophet (peace and blessings of God be upon him) and how many [rak'ahs] did the Prophet (peace and blessings of God be upon him) pray at night?" from the Book of Tahajjud, Sahih al-Bukhari 2/64. It was recorded by Muslim in: "Chapter: The Night Prayer... etc." from the Book of the Traveler's Prayer, Sahih Muslim 1/508. It was also recorded by Abu Dawud in: "Chapter: Regarding the Night Prayer," from the Book of Voluntary Prayers, Sunan Abi Dawud 1/307; and by al-Tirmidhi in: "Chapter: What has been narrated regarding Witr with five," from the Chapters on Prayer, 'Aridat al-Ahwadhi 2/246; and by al-Nasa'i in: "Chapter: How is Witr with five?" from the Book of Night Prayer, al-Mujtaba 3/198; and by al-Darimi in: "Chapter: How much is the Witr?" from the Book of Prayer, Sunan al-Darimi 1/371. (11) In the preceding chapter. Sunan Abi Dawud 1/312, 313. (12) Salih ibn Nabhan—the client of al-Taw'ama bint Umayya ibn Khalaf—al-Madani; he is Salih ibn Abi Salih, a Tabi'i regarding whose reliability there is disagreement. He died in the year 125 AH. Tahdhib al-Tahdhib 4/405-407. (13) In [Manuscripts] A and M: "sab'" (seven) is a scribal error. (14) Omitted from M. (15) In Sahih Muslim: "sani'ahu al-awwal" (his action in the first).
