perform Witr with one, let him do so." Recorded by Abu Dawud and Ibn Majah (24). On the authority of Buraydah, he said: I heard the Messenger of God (peace and blessings of God be upon him) say: "Witr is a right; whoever does not perform Witr is not one of us. Witr is a right; whoever does not perform Witr is not one of us. Witr is a right; whoever does not perform Witr is not one of us" (25). Recorded by Ahmad in al-Musnad (26) without repetition. On the authority of Abu Hurayrah (may God be pleased with him), from the Prophet (peace and blessings of God be upon him) a similar [narration] from al-Musnad as well (27). On the authority of Kharijah ibn Hudhafah, he said: The Messenger of God (peace and blessings of God be upon him) came out to us one morning and said: "Indeed, God has provided you (28) with a prayer that is better for you than red camels, and it is the Witr. He has assigned it for you between the time of 'Isha' and the breaking of dawn." Recorded by Ahmad (31) and Abu Dawud (32). On the authority of Abu Basrah, he said: I heard the Messenger of God (peace and blessings of God be upon him) say: "Indeed, God has increased you by a prayer, so perform it between the time of 'Isha' and the morning prayer; it is the Witr, the Witr." Recorded by al-Athram, and Ahmad used it as evidence (33). Our evidence is what was narrated by 'Abd Allah ibn Muhayriz, that a man from the Banu Kinanah called al-Mukhdi'i (34) heard a man in the Levant...

His statement: "without repetition," meaning the wording was not repeated, and it appeared therein as: "three." Abu Dawud recorded it with the repetition in: "Chapter: Regarding one who does not perform Witr," from the Book of Witr, Sunan Abi Dawud 1/328. (27) al-Musnad 2/443. (28) In the original: "amarakum" (He commanded you), which is a distortion. (29) In the original and in [Manuscript] A: "fahiya" (for it is). (30) In the original: "ma" (what/that). (31) We did not find it in the work of Ahmad from the hadith of Kharijah ibn Hudhafah. (32) In: "Chapter: The Desirability of Witr," from the Book of Witr, Sunan Abi Dawud 1/327. It was also recorded by al-Tirmidhi in: "Chapter: What has been narrated regarding the virtue of Witr," from the Chapters on Witr, 'Aridat al-Ahwadhi 2/241; Ibn Majah in: "Chapter: What has been narrated regarding Witr," from the Book of Establishing Prayer, Sunan Ibn Majah 1/369; and al-Darimi in: "Chapter: Regarding Witr," from the Book of Prayer, Sunan al-Darimi 1/370. (33) And he recorded it in his Musnad 6/7. (34) He is a Palestinian [man] whose name is Rafi'. See: 'Awn al-Ma'bud 1/534.
