The Prophet -peace and blessings of Allah be upon him- prayed in the mosque one night, and some people prayed with him. Then he prayed the following night, and the number of people increased. Then they gathered on the third or fourth night, but the Messenger of Allah -peace and blessings of Allah be upon him- did not come out to them. When morning came, he said: "I saw what you did, and nothing prevented me from coming out to you except that I feared it would be made obligatory (1) upon you." He said: And that was in Ramadan. Both of them were recorded by Muslim (2). And from Abu Dharr, he said: We fasted Ramadan with the Messenger of Allah -peace and blessings of Allah be upon him-, and he did not lead us in prayer for any part of the month, until seven days remained. [He stood with us in prayer until one-third of the night had passed, and when it was the sixth night, he did not stand with us] (3). Then when it was the fifth night, he stood with us until half of the night had passed.
