the night. I said: "O Messenger of Allah, would you perform voluntary prayer for us for the remainder of this night?" He said (4): "Indeed, when a man prays with the Imam until he departs, it is recorded for him as the standing of a (whole) night." He said: When it was the fourth night, he did not stand in prayer, and when it was the third night, he gathered his family, his wives, and the people, and he stood with us in prayer until we feared that we would miss the falah. I said: "What is the falah?" He said: "The suhur." Then he did not stand with us for the remainder of the month. Recorded by Abu Dawud, al-Athram, and Ibn Majah (5). And from Abu Hurayrah, he said: The Messenger of Allah -peace and blessings of Allah be upon him- went out, and behold, the people in Ramadan were praying in a corner of the mosque. He said: "Who are these?" It was said: These are people who do not have the Quran (memorized), and Ubayy ibn Ka'b is leading them in prayer, and they are praying with his prayer. The Prophet -peace and blessings of Allah be upon him- said: "They have done well, and what a good thing they have done." Recorded by Abu Dawud (6). He said: Muslim ibn Khalid recorded it, and he is weak. Tarawih was attributed to Umar [ibn al-Khattab, may Allah be pleased with him] (7) because he gathered the people under Ubayy ibn Ka'b, and he would pray it with them. So Abd al-Rahman ibn Abd al-Qari reported, saying: I went out with [Umar ibn al-Khattab] (8) one night in Ramadan, and behold, the people were scattered groups (9); a man would pray by himself, and a man would pray, and a group would pray with his prayer. Umar said: "I think that if I were to gather them under one reciter, it would be better." Then he resolved to gather them under Ubayy ibn Ka'b. He said: Then I went out with him another night, and the people were praying with the prayer of their reciter. He said: "What an excellent innovation this is, but that which they sleep through is better than that which they stand for." He means the last part of the night, and the people used to stand in prayer
