beautiful voice, singing with the Quran" (59), meaning (60) he recites it aloud, that is, for it to be heard. The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: "Beautify the Quran with your voices (61)." The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) also said: "He is not one of us who does not sing with the Quran" (62). The Salaf (early generations) differed on the meaning of his saying: "singing (yataghanna) with the Quran." Ibn Uyaynah, Abu Ubayd, a group, and others said: Its meaning is to find richness (yastaghni) through the Quran. Abu Ubayd said: "How is it permissible to interpret it as meaning that whoever does not sing with the Quran is not of the followers of the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him)?" A group of them said: Its meaning is to improve its recitation, chant it, and raise one’s voice with it. Just as Abu Musa said to the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him): "If I had known that you were listening to my recitation, I would have embellished it for you with ornamentation." Al-Shafi'i said: "He raises his voice with it." Abu Abd Allah said: "He makes it mournful (hazzanahu), so he recites it with sadness, like the voice of Abu Musa."
