124 - Issue; He said: (And one says in the morning Adhan: "Prayer is better than sleep." Twice.)
The summary of it is that it is recommended (sunnah) to say in the morning Adhan: "Prayer is better than sleep," twice, after saying: "Hayya 'ala al-falah (Come to success)." This is called al-tathwib (the additional invocation). This is the position of Ibn 'Umar, al-Hasan al-Basri, Ibn Sirin, al-Zuhri, Malik, al-Thawri, al-Awza'i, Ishaq, Abu Thawr, and al-Shafi'i in the authentic (sahih) narration from him. Abu Hanifah said: "Al-tathwib between the Adhan and the Iqamah at dawn is to say: 'Hayya 'ala al-salah (Come to prayer), twice. Hayya 'ala al-falah (Come to success), twice.'" Our evidence is what al-Nasa'i reported with his chain of narration from Abu Mahdhurah, who said: "I said: O Messenger of Allah, teach me the Sunnah of the Adhan." He then mentioned it, until he said after his saying 'Hayya 'ala al-falah': "If it is in the morning prayer, you should say: 'Prayer is better than sleep, [Prayer is better than sleep], Allah is the Greatest, Allah is the Greatest, there is no god but Allah.'" As for what they mentioned, Ishaq said: "This is something the people innovated." And Abu 'Isa said: "This is the tathwib that the scholars disliked." It is the one from which Ibn 'Umar left the mosque when he heard it.
Section: It is disliked (makruh) to perform tathwib at any time other than at dawn (Fajr), whether one performs the tathwib during the Adhan or after it, because of what was narrated from Bilal, that he said: "The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) commanded me to perform tathwib at dawn, and forbade me from performing tathwib in the evening (Isha)." Reported by Ibn Majah. Ibn 'Umar entered a mosque to pray in it and heard a man performing tathwib during the Dhuhr Adhan, so he left. It was said to him: "Where are you going?" He said: "Innovation drove me out." This is because the dawn prayer is a time when the generality of people are sleeping, and they rise to prayer from sleep, so it is uniquely distinguished by tathwib, due to its specific need for it.
