mandatory in the mosques of the congregation where prayer is held. This is because the Adhan was originally legislated for announcing the time, so that people may gather for prayer and catch the congregation. In the city (misr), one Adhan is sufficient, provided it is such that it reaches them. Ibn Aqil said: One Adhan is sufficient in the neighborhood, and the rest suffice with the Iqamah. Ahmad said regarding the one who prays at home: The Adhan of the city is sufficient for him. This is the opinion of al-Aswad, Abu Mijlaz, Mujahid, al-Sha'bi, al-Nakha'i, Ikrimah, and the scholars of opinion (Ashab al-Ra'y). Maymun ibn Mihran, al-Awza'i, and Malik said: The Iqamah is sufficient for him. Al-Hasan and Ibn Sirin said: If he wishes, he may perform the Iqamah. The basis for this is that the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said to the one he taught the prayer: "When you want to pray, perform the Wudu' well, then face the Qiblah, then say the Takbir," and he did not command him to perform the Adhan. In a wording narrated by al-Nasa'i: "Then perform the Iqamah, then say the Takbir." And the hadith of Ibn Mas'ud. The most virtuous [act] for every person praying is to perform the Adhan and the Iqamah, except that if he is praying a missed prayer (qada') or is outside the time of the Adhan, he should not recite it aloud. But if he is within the time, in the wilderness or similar places, it is recommended for him to recite the Adhan aloud, due to the statement of Abu Sa'id: "When you are with your sheep or in your wilderness, and you give the Adhan for prayer, raise your voice with the call; for no jinn, human, or anything hears the extent of the Mu'adhdhin's voice but will bear witness for him on the Day of Resurrection."
