at 'Arafah, and the night of Muzdalifah there. This is the narration of Ibn al-Qasim from Malik and is his preferred view. They argued that the times [of prayer] are established by tawatur (mutually corroborating reports), so it is not permissible to abandon them based on a single report (khabar wahid). Our response is what Nafi' reported from Ibn 'Umar, that when his journey was hastened, he would combine Maghrib and 'Isha, and say: "The Messenger of Allah (may Allah bless him and grant him peace) used to combine them when his journey was hastened." And from Anas, who said: "When the Messenger of Allah (may Allah bless him and grant him peace) departed before the sun had passed its zenith, he would delay Dhuhr until the time of 'Asr, then he would descend and combine them. If the sun had passed its zenith before he departed, he would pray Dhuhr and then mount [his ride]." Both are agreed upon. And in [the Sahih of] Muslim, from the Prophet (may Allah bless him and grant him peace): "If the journey was hastened upon him, he would delay Dhuhr until the time of 'Asr, then combine them, and delay Maghrib until he could combine it with 'Isha when the twilight had vanished."
