So how could such people have a camel [badana], or a cow, or any surplus (19), while they are of those who are reproached? His saying "raha ila al-jumu'ah" [he went early to Friday prayer] means he went to it; it cannot mean anything else.

Section: It is recommended that one walks and does not ride on the way to it, because of his saying: "and he walked and did not ride." It is reported from the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) that he did not ride to the 'Eid prayer nor for a funeral procession (20). The Friday prayer is similar in meaning to these two, and it was not mentioned specifically because the door of the Prophet's (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) room opened directly into the mosque, so he would go out from it into the mosque, meaning it did not require riding. Furthermore, the reward is based on the steps taken, as evidenced by what we have narrated. It is recommended to maintain tranquility and dignity while walking, because of the Prophet's (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) saying: "When you hear the iqamah, walk and maintain tranquility and dignity, and do not rush" (21). This is also because one who walks to the prayer is considered in a state of prayer; he should not interlock his fingers, and he should take short steps [so that they may be more for his good deeds] (22). We have narrated from the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) that he went out with Zayd (23) ibn Thabit to the prayer, and he took short steps, then said: "I only did this so that our steps would increase in seeking the prayer" (24). It is reported from 'Abd Allah ibn Rawahah that he used to go early to the Friday prayer, take off his shoes, walk barefoot, and shorten (25) his strides as he walked. This was narrated by Al-Athram. One should engage in much remembrance of Allah on his way, lower his gaze, and say what we have mentioned in the chapter on the description of

(19) In manuscripts A and M: "afdal" [better/superior]. (20) The first [hadith] was recorded by Ibn Majah, in: The Chapter on What Has Been Related Regarding Going Out to 'Eid on Foot, from the Book of Establishing Prayer. Sunan Ibn Majah 1/411. The second was recorded by Abu Dawud, in: The Chapter on Riding for a Funeral Procession, from the Book of Funerals. Sunan Abi Dawud 2/182. See: Al-Umm 1/207. (21) Its takhrij [documentation] was previously provided in 2/116. (22) In manuscripts A and M: "litakthura hasanatuhu" [so that his good deeds may increase]. (23) In manuscripts A and M: "Za'id", and in the original manuscript: "Zayid". Perhaps the correct version is what we have established, for there is no companion named Za'id or Zayid. (24) A similar hadith was recorded by Al-Nasa'i, in: The Chapter on Maintaining Prayers Where They Are Called For, from the Book of Establishing Prayer. Al-Mujtaba 2/84. (25) In manuscripts A and M: "yakhtasiru" [shortens/abbreviates].
