anyone among the attendees. Uthman and Ibn Umar forbade it. Ibn Mas'ud said: "If you see him speaking while the Imam is delivering the khutbah, strike his head with a staff." The general body of scholars disliked it, including Malik, Abu Hanifah, and al-Awza'i. There is another narration from Ahmad that it is not forbidden to speak. Sa'id ibn Jubayr, al-Nakha'i, al-Sha'bi, Ibrahim ibn Muhajir, and Abu Burdah used to speak while al-Hajjaj was delivering the khutbah. Some of them said: "We were not commanded to be silent for this [speaker]." There are two views for al-Shafi'i, like the two narrations. Those who permitted it argued based on what Anas narrated, saying: "While the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) was delivering the khutbah on the day of Jumu'ah, a man stood up and said: 'O Messenger of Allah, the horses (7) have perished and the sheep (8) have perished, so pray to Allah that He may give us rain.'" He mentioned the hadith, until he said: "Then a man entered through that door the following Jumu'ah, and the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) was standing, delivering the khutbah. He faced him while standing and said: 'O Messenger of Allah, the wealth has perished, [and the paths have been cut off] (9), so pray to Allah that He may lift it from us.'" This is agreed upon (10). It is narrated that a man stood up while the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) was delivering the khutbah on the day of Jumu'ah and said: "O Messenger of Allah, when is the Hour?" The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) turned away, and the people signaled him to be silent, but he did not accept and repeated the speech. When it was the third time, the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said to him: "Woe to you, what have you prepared for it?" He said: "The love of Allah and His Messenger." He said:
