The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) used to do that, and the Imam in this matter and its like is more emphasized than others because he is the one being looked at among the people.

Section: Fragrance (18) is recommended, as is the siwak (tooth-stick), because of the saying of the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him): "Friday Ghusl is obligatory for every person who has reached puberty, as is the siwak, and that one touches fragrance" (19). Ibn 'Abbas narrated that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: "This is a day of festival which Allah has designated for the Muslims. Whoever among you comes to the Friday prayer, let him perform Ghusl, and if he has fragrance, let him apply some of it, and you must use the siwak" (20). It is also recommended to apply oil and to clean oneself by trimming hair and removing odor, due to his (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) saying: "No man performs Ghusl on Friday and purifies himself as much as he is able, and applies oil, or touches some of the perfume of his house, then goes out and does not separate two people, then prays what has been prescribed for him, then remains silent when the Imam speaks, but that he is forgiven for what is between him and the other Friday" (21).

Section: When he comes to the mosque, it is disliked for him to step over people's necks, because of the saying of the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him): "...and he does not separate two people," and his saying: "And he does not step over the neck of a Muslim, and does not harm anyone" (22). And his saying regarding the one who came stepping over people's necks [on Friday] (23): "Sit down, for you have harmed and arrived late" (24). It is narrated from the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) that he said: "Whoever steps over people's necks on Friday has made a bridge to Hell."
