four, and in one narration: if he wishes, six. Ibn Mas'ud, al-Nakha'i, and the Ashab al-Ra'y (the proponents of reasoning) were of the view that one should pray four [rak'ahs] after it, based on what Abu Hurayrah narrated, saying: The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, said: "Whoever among you is to pray after the Jumu'ah, let him pray four after it." Recorded by Muslim (17). It is narrated from Ali, Abu Musa, Ata', Mujahid, Humayd ibn Abd al-Rahman, and al-Thawri that one should pray six, based on what is narrated from Ibn Umar: that when he was in Makkah, he would pray Jumu'ah, then move forward and pray two rak'ahs, then move forward and pray four. And when he was in Madinah, he would pray Jumu'ah, then return to his house and pray two rak'ahs, and he would not pray in the mosque. When he was asked about that, he said: The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, used to do that. Recorded by Abu Dawud (18). Our argument is that the Prophet, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, used to perform all of that, as evidenced by the reports narrated, and it is narrated from Ibn Umar that the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, used to pray two rak'ahs after Jumu'ah. This is agreed upon (19). In a wording by Muslim: And he would not
