with water and Sidr." [Agreed upon]. And in the Hadith of Umm Sulaym: "Then wash her after that three times with water and Sidr." Many of our later companions held the view that one should not leave Sidr with the water if it alters it. Then they differed; Ibn Hamid said: A small amount of Sidr, which does not alter it, should be added to all the water to combine acting upon the Hadith while the water remains pure. Al-Qadi and Abu al-Khattab said: He is washed the first time with Sidr, then he is washed after that with plain water, so the total is considered one washing, and the count is based on the latter, not the first; because Ahmad, may Allah have mercy on him, likened his washing to the washing for major ritual impurity (janaba), and because if the Sidr alters the water, it deprives it of the quality of purification, and if it does not alter it, there is no benefit in leaving a small amount that has no effect. The apparent meaning of Ahmad's words is the former. This is taken from his statement, indicating that the alteration of water by Sidr does not remove it from its purity.
