is invalidated by the Sunnah of the Fajr and Dhuhr prayers, as they are subordinate to them, yet they precede them in existence.
Section: Riding while following a funeral procession is disliked. Thawban said: We went out with the Prophet (may Allah bless him and grant him peace) for a funeral, and he saw people riding, so he said: "Are you not ashamed? The angels of Allah are on their feet, while you are on the backs of beasts." Recorded by al-Tirmidhi (10). If one does ride in a funeral procession, the Sunnah is to be behind it. al-Khattabi (11) said regarding the rider: I do not know of any disagreement among them that he should be behind it, due to the statement of the Prophet (may Allah bless him and grant him peace): "The rider proceeds behind the funeral procession, while the walker walks behind it, in front of it, to its right, and to its left, near it." Recorded by Abu Dawud (12). al-Tirmidhi recorded a similar account, and its wording is: "The rider is behind the funeral procession, and the walker is wherever he wishes from it, and the child is to be prayed over" (13). He said: This is a sound (sahih) hadith. This is because the movement of the rider in front of it harms the pedestrians, as it is the place for their walking, as we have previously stated. As for riding upon returning from it, there is no harm in that. Jabir ibn Samura said: The Prophet (may Allah bless him and grant him peace) followed the funeral of Ibn al-Dahdah walking, and returned on a horse. Recorded by Muslim (14). al-Tirmidhi said: This is a good (hasan) hadith.
