It has been narrated from Ibn 'Umar, Abu Hurayrah, 'Abdullah ibn Mughaffal, Ma'qil ibn Yasar, Abu Sa'id, 'A'ishah, and Sa'id ibn al-Musayyab that they left instructions not to be followed by fire. Ibn Majah (19) narrated that when Abu Musa was near death, he said: "Do not follow me with a censer." They asked him: "Did you hear anything regarding that?" He said: "Yes, from the Messenger of Allah (may Allah bless him and grant him peace)." Abu Dawud (20) narrated with his chain of transmission from the Prophet (may Allah bless him and grant him peace) that he said: "A funeral procession shall not be followed by a voice or fire." If the deceased is buried at night and they need light, there is no harm in it (21); what was disliked (22) were the censers containing incense. In a hadith from the Prophet (may Allah bless him and grant him peace), it is mentioned that he entered a grave at night and a lamp was lit for him (23). Al-Tirmidhi said: This is a hasan (good) hadith.

Section: It is disliked for women to follow funeral processions, based on what was narrated from Umm 'Atiyyah, who said: "We were forbidden from following funeral processions, but it was not made absolute upon us." This is agreed upon (24). Ibn Mas'ud, Ibn 'Umar, Abu Umamah, 'A'ishah, Masruq, al-Hasan, al-Nakha'i, al-Awza'i, and Ishaq also disliked this. It was narrated that the Prophet (may Allah bless him and grant him peace) went out and found some women sitting; he said: "What makes you sit?"
