They said: We are waiting for the funeral. He said: Do you wash [the deceased]? They said: No. He said: Do you carry [the deceased]? They said: No. He said: Do you lower [the deceased into the grave] among those who lower? They said: No. He said: Then return with burdens, not being rewarded. It was narrated by Ibn Majah (25). It was also narrated that the Prophet (may Allah bless him and grant him peace) met Fatimah and said: What brought you out of your house, O Fatimah? She said: O Messenger of Allah, I came to the people of this house to show them mercy for their deceased or to offer them condolences for it. The Messenger of Allah (may Allah bless him and grant him peace) said to her: Perhaps you reached the Kuda with them? She said: May Allah protect me, and I have heard you mention what you mention regarding it. He said: If you had reached the Kuda with them (26). He mentioned a severe warning. It was narrated by Abu Dawud (27).

Section: If there is a reprehensible act (munkar) with the funeral that one sees or hears, if one is able to forbid it and remove it, one should remove it. If one is not able to remove it, there are two views: The first is that one should denounce it and continue following the funeral, whereby the obligation [to attend] is satisfied by the denunciation, and one should not abandon a truth for a falsehood. The second is that one should return, because it leads to listening to and seeing something forbidden, while being able to avoid that. The basis for this is in [bathing, as there] (28) are two narrations regarding it; thus, two views are derived regarding following it [the funeral].

354 - Issue; He said: (The tarbi' [carrying in a square formation] is for it to be placed on the right shoulder toward the foot, then the left shoulder toward the foot).

Al-tarbi' is taking hold of the four sides of the bier (sarir), and it is a Sunnah in carrying the funeral, due to the statement of Ibn Mas'ud: If one of you follows a funeral, let him take hold of the four sides of the bier, then let him voluntarily [continue] after that or leave it, for it is of the Sunnah.
