‘Ali, may Allah be pleased with him, says: The Prophet (may Allah bless him and grant him peace) used to stand when he saw a funeral, then he abandoned that afterwards. Ahmad said: If one stands, I do not fault him, and if one sits, there is no harm. Ibn Abi Musa and the Qadi mentioned that standing is recommended because the Prophet (may Allah bless him and grant him peace) said: "When one of you sees a funeral, let him stand when he sees it, until it passes him." Narrated by Muslim (7). We have already mentioned that the final of the two matters from the Messenger of Allah (may Allah bless him and grant him peace) is to abandon standing for it, and adopting the latter of his commands is more appropriate. It has been narrated in a Hadith that a Jew saw the Prophet (may Allah bless him and grant him peace) standing for a funeral and said: "O Muhammad, this is what we do." So the Prophet (may Allah bless him and grant him peace) stopped standing for it (8).
Section: For those who follow the funeral procession, it is recommended not to sit until it is placed down. Among those who were of the opinion that one should not sit until it is taken off the shoulders of the men were al-Hasan ibn ‘Ali, Ibn ‘Umar, Abu Hurayrah, Ibn al-Zubayr, al-Nakha‘i, al-Sha‘bi, al-Awza‘i, and Ishaq. The reasoning for this is what Muslim narrated (9) with his chain of authority from Abu Sa‘id, who said: The Messenger of Allah (may Allah bless him and grant him peace) said: "When you follow a funeral, do not sit until it is placed down." Al-Shafi‘i held the view that this is abrogated
