from the "Musnad" (19). Our evidence is what Muslim (20) and others narrated from Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her), who said: 'The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) only prayed over Suhayl ibn Bayda' in the mosque.' Sa'id said: Malik narrated to us, from Salim Abu al-Nadr, who said: 'When Sa'd ibn Abi Waqqas died, Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) said: "Bring him past me so that I may pray for him." The people disapproved of that, so she said: "How quickly people forget! The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) only prayed over Suhayl ibn Bayda' in the mosque"' (20). He [Sa'id] also said: 'Abd al-Aziz ibn Muhammad narrated to us, from Hisham ibn Urwah, from his father, who said: "The funeral prayer was performed for Abu Bakr in the mosque" (22). And he said: Malik narrated to us, from Nafi', from Ibn Umar, who said: "The funeral prayer was performed for Umar in the mosque" (24). This took place in the presence of the Companions (may Allah be pleased with them) and was not disapproved of, thus it constitutes consensus. Furthermore, since it is a prayer, it is not forbidden [in the mosque], like all other prayers. Their [the opponents'] hadith is narrated by Salih Mawla al-Taw'ama. Ibn Abd al-Barr said: There are some scholars who do not accept anything from his hadith due to his weakness, because he became confused [in his memory], while others accept from him only what he narrated specifically from Ibn Abi Dhib, and then it is interpreted as applying to cases where it is feared that the deceased might rupture or soil the mosque.
