Ali, may Allah be pleased with him. It is narrated from Ibn Abbas that when he buried Zayd ibn Thabit, he cast three handfuls into his grave and said: "Thus does knowledge pass away (20)."
Section: When placing the deceased into his grave, one says what was narrated by Ibn Umar, that the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) would say when the deceased was brought into the grave: "In the name of Allah, and upon the creed of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him)." It is also narrated: "And upon the sunnah of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him)." Al-Tirmidhi said (21): This is a hasan gharib (good but singular) hadith. Ibn Majah (22) narrated from Sa'id ibn al-Musayyab, who said: I attended a funeral with Ibn Umar, and when he placed it into the lahd, he said: "In the name of Allah, and in the way of Allah, and upon the creed of the Messenger of Allah." Then, when he began to level the bricks (23) over the lahd, he said: "O Allah, protect her from the Devil and from the torment of the grave. O Allah, cause the earth to draw away from her sides, elevate her spirit, and grant her contentment from You." I said: "O Ibn Umar, is this something you heard from the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him), or did you say it of your own opinion?" He replied: "If I were capable of such a statement! Rather, I heard it from (24) the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him)." It is narrated from Umar, may Allah be pleased with him, that when the soil was leveled over the deceased, he would say: "O Allah, the family, wealth, and clan have surrendered him to You, and his sins are great, so forgive him." Narrated by Ibn al-Mundhir (25).
