except for a small amount, according to the statement of the Prophet, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, to 'Ali, may Allah be pleased with him: "Do not leave any image without effacing it, nor any grave elevated without leveling it." Extracted by Muslim and others. The 'elevated' (mushrif) is that which is raised significantly, evidenced by the statement of al-Qasim describing the grave of the Prophet, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, and his two companions: "Neither elevated nor flat." It is recommended that water be sprinkled on the grave so that its soil settles. Abu Rafi' said: The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, leveled [the grave of] Sa'd and sprinkled water on his grave. Extracted by Ibn Majah. From Jabir, it is reported that the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, had water sprinkled on his grave. Both were extracted by al-Khallal.
Section: There is no harm in marking the grave with a stone or a piece of wood. Ahmad said: There is no harm for a man to mark the grave with a sign by which he may recognize it. The Prophet, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, marked the grave of 'Uthman ibn Maz'un. Abu Dawud reported with his chain of transmission from al-Muttalib, who said: When 'Uthman ibn Maz'un died, his funeral procession went out and he was buried. The Prophet, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, ordered a man to bring him a stone, but he could not carry it. So the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, stood up, bared his forearms, then carried it himself and placed it at his head, saying: "I will mark (ata'allamu) my brother's grave with it, and bury those of his family who die next to him." It was also extracted by Ibn Majah from the Prophet, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, through the narration of Anas.
