Allah: And who would doubt (4) the prayer over the grave! It is narrated from the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) through six channels, all of which are hasan (sound). Furthermore, since he is among the people of prayer, it is prescribed for him that prayer be performed over his grave, just as it is for the wali (guardian). As for the grave of the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him), prayer is not performed over it, because one does not pray over a grave after a month has passed.
Section: Whoever has prayed once, it is not prescribed for him to repeat the prayer over him. Once the funeral prayer has been performed for the deceased, it is not placed down for anyone else to pray over him. Al-Qadi said: It is not appropriate [to pray] after the prayer has been performed over him, and one should hasten to bury him. If the arrival of the wali is hoped for, it may be delayed until he arrives, unless it is feared that the body might decompose. Ibn 'Aqil said: One should not wait for anyone because the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said regarding Talhah ibn al-Bara': "Hasten with him, for it is not fitting for the corpse of a Muslim to be detained between the hands of his family" (5). As for those who reach the funeral procession among those who have not prayed, it is permissible for them to pray over him. This was practiced by 'Ali, Anas, Salman (6) ibn Rabi'ah, Abu Hamzah (7), and Ma'mar ibn Sumayr (8).
Section: One may pray over the grave, and the prayer may be repeated over him before burial, both in congregation and individually.
