Sa'id narrated, with his chain of narration from al-Sha'bi, that Umm Kulthum bint 'Ali and her son Zayd ibn 'Umar both died, and their funerals were brought out. The governor of Medina prayed over them, and he leveled them between their heads and their feet when he prayed over them (10). And with his chain of narration from Habib ibn Abi Thabit (11), he said: Sa'id ibn Jubayr came to the people of Mecca while they were leveling the man and the woman when praying over them, and he wanted them to place the woman's head at the middle (12) of the man, but they refused him (13). The second narration is that he should line up (14) the men in a row and the women in a row, and place the middle of the women at the chests of the men. This is the choice of Abu al-Khattab, so that the Imam's standing position is at the chest of the man and the middle of the woman. Sa'id said: Khalid ibn Yazid ibn Abi Malik al-Dimashqi narrated to me. He said: My father narrated to me, saying: I saw Wathilah ibn al-Asqa' praying over funerals of men and women when they were gathered, as he would line up the men in a row, then he would line up the women behind the men, placing the head of the first woman at the knee of the last man, then he would line them up, then he would stand at the middle of the men. And if they were all men, he would line them up, then stand in their middle (15). This resembles the madhhab of Malik and the opinion of Sa'id ibn Jubayr. What we have mentioned is more appropriate, because it is indicated by the action of the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him), and there is no argument in the statement of anyone who contradicts his action or his speech. And Allah knows best.
