[Except that] (13) it occurs with a 'waw' in place of the 'ya', and sometimes the alif and ha are added to it, such as their saying: 'Wa-rajulah', 'Wa-jabalah', 'Wa-inqita' zahrah', and similar phrases. As for wailing (niyaha), striking the face, tearing the garments, beating the cheeks, and invoking woe and destruction, some of our companions said: 'It is disliked (makruh).' Harb narrated from Ahmad words that contain the possibility of permitting wailing (nauh) and lamentation (nadb). Al-Khallal and his companion chose this, because Wathila ibn al-Asqa' and Abu Wa'il used to listen (14) to wailing and weep (15). Ahmad said: 'If a woman mentions something like what was narrated from Fatimah, in the context of supplication, it is not like wailing.' Meaning, there is no harm in it. [Al-Bukhari] narrated [with his chain of transmission] (16) from Fatimah (may Allah be pleased with her) that she said: 'O my dear father, how near he is to his Lord; O my dear father, I announce his death to Gabriel; O my dear father, he has answered a Lord who called him.' It was narrated from 'Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) that Fatimah (may Allah be pleased with her) took a handful of the soil of the grave of the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him), placed it upon her eyes, and then said:

What is it for one who has smelled the soil of Ahmad, that he should not smell [precious] perfumes for the rest of time? (17)

A calamity has been poured upon me, if it were poured upon the days, they would turn into nights. (18)

The apparent meaning of the reports indicates the prohibition of wailing and these aforementioned things, because the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) forbade them in the hadith of Jabir (19), due to the saying of Allah the Almighty: {And they will not disobey you in any good deed} (20). Ahmad said: 'It is wailing.' The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) cursed the wailing woman and the woman who listens to her (21). Umm 'Atiyyah said: 'The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) took a pledge from us at the time of the bay'ah (oath of allegiance) that we would not wail.' Agreed upon (22). And from Abu Musa, that the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) [disassociated himself from the one who raises her voice (saliqah), the one who shaves her head (haliqah), and the one who tears her garment (shaqqah) (23). The saliqah is the one who raises her voice. And from Ibn Mas'ud, that the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him)] (24), said: 'He is not one of us who strikes the cheeks, tears the garments, and calls out with the call of the Jahiliyyah.' Agreed upon (25). And because that resembles complaining (26), seeking help, and discontent.
