graves from being stepped upon. Ibn Majah (7) narrated that the Messenger of Allah (may Allah bless him and grant him peace) said: "That I should walk upon a burning coal, or a sword, or mend my sandal (8) with my foot, is more beloved to me than to walk upon the grave of a Muslim. And I do not care whether I satisfy my need in the midst of the graves,"—thus he said—"or in the midst of the marketplace." This is because he disliked walking among them while wearing sandals, so walking upon them is even more worthy of being disliked.
Section: It is disliked to sit upon them or lean against them, for what Abu Marthad (9) narrated that the Messenger of Allah (may Allah bless him and grant him peace) said: ["Do not sit upon graves, and do not pray facing them." Abu Hurayrah also narrated that the Messenger of Allah (may Allah bless him and grant him peace) said:] (10) "That one of you should sit upon a burning coal that burns his clothes and reaches his skin is better for him than to sit upon a grave." Both were narrated (11) by Muslim (12). Al-Khattabi (13) said: It is narrated that the Prophet (may Allah bless him and grant him peace) saw a man who had leaned against a grave and said: "Do not harm the occupant of the grave."
