He said: "A sa' of wheat for every two people." Narrated by Abu Dawud (3). From 'Amr ibn Shu'ayb, from his father, from his grandfather, that the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) sent a caller into the mountain passes of Makkah (to announce): "Verily, Sadaqat al-Fitr is obligatory upon every Muslim, male or female, free or slave, young or old; two mudds of wheat or its equivalent (4), [or] a sa' of food (5)." Al-Tirmidhi said: "This is a hasan gharib hadith (6)." Sa'id said: Hushaym narrated to us, from 'Abd al-Khaliq al-Shaybani, who said: I heard Sa'id ibn al-Musayyib saying: "Charity was paid during the time of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) and Abu Bakr as half a sa' of wheat." Hushaym said: Sufyan ibn Husayn informed me, from al-Zuhri, from Sa'id ibn al-Musayyib, who said: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) delivered a sermon, then he mentioned Sadaqat al-Fitr and encouraged it, saying: "Half a sa' of wheat, or a sa' of (7) dates or barley, for every (8) free person and slave, male and female (9)." We continued to give it that way until Mu'awiyah arrived in Madinah and spoke, and among the things (10) he spoke to the people about was: 'I see that two mudds of the wheat of al-Sham (Syria) are equal to a sa' of dates (11).' So the people adopted that." Abu Sa'id said: "I will continue to give it as I used to give it." Ibn 'Umar narrated that the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) made obligatory the Sadaqat al-Fitr as a sa' of dates, or a sa' of barley, he said (11), so the people turned toward
