half a sa' of wheat. Both are agreed upon (12). Furthermore, because it is a type that is given in Sadaqat al-Fitr, its amount should be a sa' like other types. Their hadiths do not hold up regarding the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him), as stated by Ibn al-Mundhir. The hadith of Tha'labah was narrated solely (13) by al-Nu'man ibn Rashid. Al-Bukhari said: "He is very prone to error, though he is essentially truthful." Muhanna said: "I mentioned to Ahmad the hadith of Tha'labah ibn Abi Su'ayr regarding Sadaqat al-Fitr being half a sa' of wheat." He replied: "It is not authentic; it is mursal (a chain missing the Companion). It is narrated by [Ma'mar and Ibn Jurayj] (14) from al-Zuhri as a mursal report." I asked: "From whom does this come?" He said: "From the side of al-Nu'man ibn Rashid; he is not strong in hadith." He weakened the hadith of Ibn Abi Su'ayr. I asked him about Ibn Abi Su'ayr: "Is he well-known?" He replied: "Who knows Ibn Abi Su'ayr? He is not known." Ahmad and 'Ali ibn al-Madini both mentioned Ibn Abi Su'ayr and weakened him. Ibn 'Abd al-Barr said: "There is no one after al-Zuhri who serves as a proof for it." It was narrated by Abu Ishaq al-Jawzajani: Sulayman ibn Harb narrated to us, Hammad ibn Zayd narrated to us, from al-Nu'man, from al-Zuhri, from Tha'labah, from his father, who said: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: "Pay Sadaqat al-Fitr as a sa' of wheat," or he said: "of grain, for every person, young or old" (15). This is evidence for us, and its chain of narration is hasan (sound). Al-Jawzajani said: "As for the half sa', he mentioned it from the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him), but his narration does not hold up." This is also because what we have mentioned contains precaution for the obligation and is supported by analogy (qiyas).

Section: We have previously demonstrated that the sa' is five and one-third Iraqi ratls. The basis for it is volume (kil), and scholars only estimated it by weight so that it could be preserved and transmitted. A group has narrated from Ahmad that he said: "I weighed the sa' and found it to be five and one-third ratls of wheat."
