charity, then he sits down begging from people. The best of charity is that which leaves one independent of means." The Prophet (may Allah bless him and grant him peace) has thus alerted us to the reason for which he disliked giving away one's entire wealth in charity, which is that one might end up begging from people, that is, exposing oneself to them for charity, meaning he takes it with the palm of his hand; it is said: takaffafa and istakaffa when one does that. Al-Nasa'i reported that the Prophet (may Allah bless him and grant him peace) gave a man two garments from the charity, then urged (the people) to give charity, so the man cast away one of his two garments. The Prophet (may Allah bless him and grant him peace) said: "Do you not see this one? He came in a disheveled state, so I gave him two garments, then I said: Give charity. So he cast away one of his two garments. Take your garment!" And he rebuked him. This is because a person, if he gives away all his wealth, is not secure from the trial of poverty and the intense struggle of the soul for what has left it, so he regrets it, his wealth is gone, his reward is invalidated, and he becomes a burden upon the people. It is disliked for one who does not have patience with hardship to reduce himself below the level of total self-sufficiency. And Allah knows best.
