from the body, resembling bloodletting (fasd). Our evidence is the saying of the Prophet (may Allah bless him and grant him peace): "The one who performs cupping and the one who receives it have broken their fast" (9). It was narrated from the Prophet (may Allah bless him and grant him peace) by eleven people. Ahmad said: "The hadith of Shaddad ibn Aws is among the most authentic of what is narrated on this subject, and the chain of narration of the hadith of Rafi' is a sound (jayyid) chain." He also said: "The hadith of Shaddad and Thawban are authentic." From 'Ali ibn al-Madini, it is reported that he said: "The most authentic thing in this subject is the hadith of Shaddad and Thawban." Their hadith (the opposing view) is abrogated by our hadith, by the evidence of what Ibn 'Abbas narrated, saying: "The Messenger of Allah (may Allah bless him and grant him peace) was cupped at al-Qahah (10) while in the state of ihram and fasting, and he felt severe weakness from that, so the Messenger of Allah (may Allah bless him and grant him peace) forbade the fasting person from receiving cupping." It was recorded by Abu Ishaq al-Jawzajani in "al-Mutarjam" (11). From al-Hakam, he said: "The Messenger of Allah (may Allah bless him and grant him peace) was cupped while fasting and became weak, then cupping was disliked for the fasting person." Ibn 'Abbas, who was the narrator of their hadith, used to prepare the cupper and the cupping instruments, and when the sun set
