return with nothing [of that]. (10) Thus, it is recommended to keep them free for voluntary fasting in order to attain their excellence, and to perform the make-up fasts in other days. Some of our companions said: These two narrations are based upon the [two narrations regarding] (11) the permissibility and prohibition (12) of voluntary fasting before the obligatory fast. Thus, whoever permits it considers it reprehensible to perform make-up fasts during them, in order to reserve them (13) for voluntary fasting, so as to attain their excellence (14) alongside the performance of the make-up fast, while whoever prohibits it does not consider it reprehensible during them; rather, he recommends performing them during them so that one is not entirely devoid of worship. It is stronger in my view that these two narrations are a derivative issue based on the permissibility of voluntary fasting before the obligatory. As for the narration of prohibition, then fasting them voluntarily before the obligatory would be prohibited, and that is more severe than reprehensibility. And Allah knows best.

507 - Issue; He said: (And it is permissible for the sick person to break his fast if the fasting increases his illness. If he endures it and fasts, that is considered reprehensible for him, but it suffices him.)

The people of knowledge have reached a consensus on the permissibility of breaking the fast for the sick person in general. The basis for this is the saying of the Almighty: {But if any of you is ill, or on a journey, the prescribed number (should be made up) from days later.} (1) The illness that permits breaking the fast is the severe one which is exacerbated by fasting or where there is a fear of the delay of its recovery. It was said to Ahmad: When does the sick person break his fast?
