508 - Issue: He said: (And likewise the traveler).

This means that the traveler is permitted to break his fast. If he fasts, it is disliked for him, yet it is valid. The permissibility of breaking the fast for the traveler is established by textual evidence (nass) and consensus (ijma'). Most scholars maintain that if he fasts, it suffices him. It is reported from Abu Hurayrah that the fast of a traveler is not valid. Ahmad said: Umar and Abu Hurayrah used to command him to repeat it. Al-Zuhri reported, from Abu Salamah, from his father Abd al-Rahman ibn Awf, that he said: "The fasting person while traveling is like the one who breaks his fast while at home" (1). A group from the Zahiris held this view, based on the statement of the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him): "It is not of piety to fast while traveling." [Agreed upon] (2). Also, because he (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) broke his fast while traveling; when it reached him that some people had fasted, he said: "Those (3) are the disobedient ones" (4). Ibn Majah (5) reported with his chain of narration from the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) that he said: "The fasting person in Ramadan while traveling is like the one who breaks his fast while at home."
