This hadith indicates that (8) what is disliked is singling it out, because the prohibition is reasoned by the fact that she did not fast yesterday nor [did she intend to fast] tomorrow.
Section: Our companions said: It is disliked to single out Saturday for fasting, due to what was narrated by 'Abd Allah ibn Busr from the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him), who said: "Do not fast on Saturday except in what has been made obligatory upon you." Recorded by al-Tirmidhi (9), who said: This is a hasan (good) hadith. It was also narrated from 'Abd Allah ibn Busr, from his sister al-Samma', that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: "Do not fast on Saturday, except in what has been made obligatory upon you; and if one of you finds nothing but a grape twig or a tree branch, let him chew it." Recorded by Abu Dawud (10), who said: The name of the sister of 'Abd Allah ibn Busr is Hujaymah (11) or Juhaymah. Al-Athram said: Abu 'Abd Allah said: As for fasting on Saturday while singling it out (12) for it, the hadith of al-Samma' has been reported regarding it; Yahya ibn Sa'id used to avoid it—meaning that he would narrate it to me—and I heard it from Abu 'Asim. What is disliked is singling it out; if one fasts another day along with it, it is not disliked, due to the hadith of Abu Hurayrah and Juwayriyah. If it coincides with a person's [usual] fast, it is not disliked, for the reason we previously mentioned. Our companions said: It is disliked to single out the day of Nayruz (13) and the day of Mihrajan (14).
(8) Dropped from [copies] B and M. (9) We did not find this in al-Tirmidhi; rather, he reported the following hadith from 'Abd Allah ibn Busr from his sister al-Samma'. The hadith was recorded by Ibn Majah, in: The Chapter on What Has Been Mentioned Regarding Fasting on Saturday, from the Book of Fasting. Sunan Ibn Majah 1/550. And Imam Ahmad, in: Al-Musnad 4/189. (10) In: The Chapter on the Prohibition of Specifying Saturday with Fasting, from the Book of Fasting. Sunan Abi Dawud 1/564. It was also recorded by al-Tirmidhi, in: The Chapter on What Has Been Mentioned Regarding Fasting on Saturday, from the Chapters of Fasting. 'Aridat al-Ahwadhi 3/279. And Ibn Majah, in: The Chapter on What Has Been Mentioned Regarding Fasting on Saturday, from the Book of Fasting. Sunan Ibn Majah 1/550. And al-Darimi, in: The Chapter on Fasting on Saturday, from the Book of Fasting. Sunan al-Darimi 2/19. And Imam Ahmad, in: Al-Musnad 6/368. (11) Ibn Hajar mentioned her in al-Isabah 8/146 and said: It is said this is the name of al-Samma', the sister of 'Abd Allah ibn Busr. Ibn Hajar also mentioned in al-Isabah 7/539 that her name is Bahiyyah—with a shaddah, as a diminutive—and it is said: Bahimah, with a mim. (12) Thus it is; meaning he fasts it alone. (13) Nayruz: The first day of the Persian solar year and their greatest holiday; it coincides with the twenty-first of March in the Gregorian calendar. (14) Mihrajan day: A festival held by the Persians in celebration of the autumnal equinox.
