the Great Hajj not be from its months! Furthermore, it is the opinion of those whom we have named from the Companions. Also, the Day of Sacrifice contains a pillar of Hajj, which is the Tawaaf al-Ziyarah (Circumambulation of Visitation), and it contains many of the acts of Hajj, among them: stoning the Jamrat al-Aqabah, the sacrifice (nahr), the shaving of the head (halq), the Tawaaf, the Sa'i (running between Safa and Marwa), and returning to Mina. What comes after it is not from its months, because it is not a time for its ihram, nor for its pillars; it is thus like the forbidden. It is not impossible to express two things and part of a third using the plural form (4). Some masters of the Arabic language have said: "Twenty" is the plural of "ten," even though it is actually two tens and a part of a third. Allah the Almighty said: "...they shall wait for themselves three periods (quru')" (5). The quru' is the period of purity (tuhr) according to him (the Shafi'i scholar), and if he divorces her during a period of purity, it counts as the remainder of that period. The Arabs say: "Three (days) have passed from Dhu al-Hijjah," while they are still in the third day. His saying: "Whoever adopts Hajj therein," means during the majority of them. And Allah knows best.
(4) Meaning: ten, ten, and part of the third ten until it is completed; when it is completed, it is said: thirty. (5) Surat al-Baqarah, 228.
