the journey. He said: "Perform Hajj on behalf of your father, and perform Umrah." Narrated by Abu Dawud, al-Nasa'i, and al-Tirmidhi (25), who said: A hasan sahih hadith. Ahmad mentioned it, then said: A hadith narrated by Sa'id ibn Abd al-Rahman al-Jumahi, from Ubayd Allah (26), from Nafi', from Ibn Umar, who said: A man came to the Prophet (peace be upon him) and said: "Advise me." He said: "Establish prayer, give zakah, perform Hajj, and perform Umrah." Al-Athram narrated with his chain from Abu Bakr ibn Muhammad ibn Amr ibn Hazm, from his father, from his grandfather, that the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) wrote to the people of Yemen, and in the letter it said: "Indeed, Umrah is the lesser Hajj." Furthermore, this is the view of those we named among the Companions, and we know of no one who differs with them except Ibn Mas'ud, regarding whom there is a difference of opinion. As for the hadith of Jabir, al-Tirmidhi said that al-Shafi'i said: It is weak; no proof can be established with the likes of it, and there is nothing established in Umrah that it is voluntary (tatawwu'). Ibn Abd al-Barr said: This was narrated with chains that are not authentic, and no proof can be established with their likes. Then we interpret it as referring to the well-known Umrah, which is the Umrah they performed when they were detained at al-Hudaybiyyah, or the Umrah they performed alongside their Hajj with the Prophet (peace be upon him), for it was not obligatory upon those who performed that Umrah. Or we interpret it as referring to what is in excess of a single Umrah. Umrah differs from tawaf because one of its conditions is ihram, whereas tawaf is different.

Section: There is no Umrah upon the people of Makkah. Ahmad explicitly stated this and said: Ibn Abbas
